Quilt!

Hi everyone, I know there's a few replies to my last post I haven't got to yet, I've been trying to do a lot of processing and stuff (update soon I guess?) so my executive function for Peopleing has been a smidge low (and really I should be working but I'm not...) but. The other week I promised pictures of my paper piecing, so I've grabbed a few.

This one was my first attempt, based off blocks in The 1718 Coverlet by Susan Briscoe. This is a layout photo and not a great one because I took it a while back - it's all sewn together now and being quilted. I cut the paper shapes myself from copier paper and used fabric scraps to make it up.



This next photo is a pincushion I made out of a kit my mum bought for me, the fabrics aren't my style but it looks nice:



This next one is a star quily I'm making for Keats. I'm using actual sturdy pre-cut papers here and I learned how to baste without going all the way through. Excuse the extra black planets and grey constellations stars, I had to fill a gap to demonstrate. Mum thinks I need another colour for variety but I'm not sure.



Finally this is the quilt I started when I temporarily ran out of hexagons (I have more now, Keats sent some). This one I think makes me happiest because the star quilt had a few issues (I wasn't going to do that block, I was going to do one called Heavenly Stars instead) and also this one is - nerd alert - in theme with that novel What I Wrote so I have a deep fondness for it.

This all sounds very cool, and I love the idea that you're making a quilt thematically connected to your novel. :) But, also, the pictures aren't showing up? (It says 'not authorized'?)

I've edited the post, my images page says that the security on the pictures is public but it did before so I don't know if it's okay or not!

The stars-and-planets quilt looks so cool; I agree with you that it doesn't need any more variety. :) There's enough going on with the patterns that more colors might actually make it too busy.

The one that's in-theme with your novel looks very pastoral in colors/patterns, but the actual shape/design makes me think of stained glass! I can see why that'd relate to your novel, and I think it's lovely. :)

Thank you so much! I really appreciate you saying about it not needing extra, that makes me feel a bit better about just going straight on with it. If it needs extra I can always add some coloured borders.

I'm so glad it looks like stained glass! That was something I didn't see until it was all sewn together but I'm glad that comes across to you because it really works with the theme like you say.

These all look really cool and I'm excited to see how they progress! I like the space patterns on the stars and the greens on the lower ones that are related to your novel.

they're all quite lovely! <3 (I do like the pincushion fabrics myself) though I think my favorite right now might be the greens related to your novel, which is partly the color but aaahh maybe the fussy-cut(?) central cross is part of what's doing it for me. Because I think I have seen a similar motif before in more stained-glass colors and I'm pretty sure I like this rendition a lot better.

by the by, do those motifs tessellate together? I'm trying to work it out in my head but all I can think of is perhaps butting the elongated hexes that terminate the + arms together and filling in with a four-hex cross? (or do I need to wait to hear about a future stage of quilt assembly? did I make any sense describing that? X/ )

(i'm probably asking too many questions, but if you have a link to the Heavenly Stars I'm curious which one it was? the name doesn't seem to be tied to one single design)

You can also do it in patchwork as well as EPP with all HSTs instead of diamond shapes. (I'll leave the rest to Bow but I just happened to be here and know what block he's talking about.)

It's funny you should ask because I sewed them into a strip the other day! I don't think I can put a photo in comments? I'm still a dw baby. But yes you're exactly right, the two go together on the long side of the honeycomb/hex shape and then you fill in the gaps with a honeycomb cross. Or you could use house shapes and a square, but not the same size of house as I made the inner cross one, as I found out when I tried (I had to have this realisation twice in the space of three days)

Actually, I /really/ don't know if I just tried to use the houses in the wrong place? I'm lost rn. But if you have instagram there are pictures in the #prudencequilt tag that have it tesselated with houses and squares.
